Karen Nicol Textile Art

Karen Nicol

Having studied BA (Hons) in Multi-disciplinary Design, I then worked in interior design and photography.

My recent work began with inspiring photographs of our whippets and a love of fabric, which led me to create freehand machine embroidered and appliquéd pictures. In my studio on the edge of Dartmoor, I learnt to draw with my sewing machine, working from sketches and photographs of the creatures I meet, combining the elegance of my images with the texture and warmth of fabric and the stitched line. Each original piece is then mounted and framed.

My Imagination Leads Me To Sew...

A large part of my work is commissioned, both at home and internationally, which provides me with a huge diversity, and I enjoy immensely the challenges which this presents. I have sewn commissions ranging from a trio of oriental cats living in Berlin, to ‘The Hero’, a portrait of a large Bassett Hound who caught a handbag thief at Badminton Horse Trials!

Often inspired by a piece of vintage fabric or a photograph, my imagination leads me to sew the quirky, beautiful, magical, and sometimes humorous or touching.
