Kevin Tharme

Kevin was the MD and co-founder of a software design and support company for just over 30 years. He also took on additional director and trustee duties in other companies and voluntary organisations. In 2020 he decided it was time for a complete change of direction, so began winding down the corporate responsibilities and try his hand at becoming an Artist.

The desire to create art has always been there, however like many, this was not encouraged. I guess the creative juices still leaked out, being involved in IT systems design particularly with MMI (man-machine-interface). However, from 2022, the label of full-time artist came into being.

Kevin is currently concentrating on painting impressionistic and abstract work using different mediums. He has experimented with ‘realism’ and attended a portraiture course at Newlyn Art School in 2023. So now describes his work as varied.

Kevin’s work often references issues concerning climate, climate change and sustainability, both directly and indirectly.

The Art

Ad Vos (See what you will)

Capturing Essence, Evoking Emotion. A Passion for Art, Nature & Form.

Kevin uses different mediums  when creating artwork, be that oils, acrylics, coloured pencil or digital. However, his favourite medium remains painting with oils on canvas.

Kevin loves to use colour, often applying colour to dramatic affect. He sets out to observe life and landscape and then to capture and represent the emotion and mood behind what he paints. Kevin loves commissions, he listens and reads the brief, and then attempts to search and find that little extra something that makes the piece truly special for the client.

Examples of this process are particularly visible in some his works on show here. The commission ‘My Time’, an acrylic on canvas, was painted for a specific brief, which he interpreted as a reflection about a restorative retreat taken by the client on the Isle of Iona following successfully navigating cancer, major surgeries and Covid. The artwork music, colour, energy, optimism, faith, reflection, and peace - core values and references important to them. Their time in Scotland profoundly affected them on their journey through life, whilst acknowledging obstacles overcome and preparing to find a path through obstacles yet to come.

In contrast the abstract piece Ad Vos, considers the actions of mankind and their effect on the natural world. Mankind’s destructive power is juxtaposed in the frame by one of nature’s own destroyers, woodworm. Then again, the viewer could consider doing a 180 and ponder what could happen when the natural world fights back.

Lastly Dartmoor Breathes. Dartmoor provides endless inspiration on the doorstep. This large work, captures the majesty and size of the moor, and its life supporting presence in the heart of Devon, and acknowledging the beauty and ever changing light.
